Conservation and Adventure Freediving Expedition

This expedition is designed for aspiring scientists, adventure conservationists, and naturalists who want to learn to freedive before heading up the coast to Mozambique! Start your journey in Umkomaas where you will spend 1 week gaining your Adventure Freediver I certification, and helping out with manta and devil ray research in Aliwal Shoal. Next, you will travel to our base in Závora, Mozambique where you will spend 2+ weeks learning about various different megafauna species. 

What you can expect to learn on this expedition: 

  • Adventure Freediving 
  • Comprehensive knowledge on sharks, rays, fish, and invertebrates
  • Proper protocol and photo-identification of megafauna, including:
    • Manta Rays
    • Leopard Sharks
    • Wedgefish and guitarfish
    • Whale sharks
    • Turtles
  • Whale watching and humpback whale fluke ID (June-October)
  • Nudibranch identification and species cataloging
  • Turtle patrolling and monitoring during nesting season (March-November)
  • Participation in community activities including:
    • Public talks
    • Beach clean-ups
    • Underwater clean-ups
