Sardine Run

Experience the annual phenomenon on the east coast of South Africa!

Every winter, usually between May and July, South Africa’s east coast becomes the stage for one of the greatest natural spectacles on Earth:

The Sardine Run

Billions of sardines migrate northward in dense shoals that can stretch for kilometres, following cold currents up the coast. This phenomenon is so vast that it’s visible from the air, and so intense that it draws an extraordinary concentration of marine life.

The Sardine Run is not just about the fish— it’s about the predators and the balance of the ocean ecosystem. Dolphins, often in their thousands, herd the sardines into tight bait balls. Cape gannets plunge like arrows from the sky, while sharks, seals, and even Bryde’s and humpback whales join the feeding frenzy.

For divers, snorkelers, and photographers, it offers a rare opportunity to witness raw oceanic life at its most dramatic.

The Sardine Run is designed for adventure seekers who are ready for one of the ocean’s most exhilarating wildlife experiences. This is a fast-action event, with long days at sea and unpredictable conditions, which is why the trip is rated as strenuous.

Best suited for Advanced Open Water divers (or higher) who have solid buoyancy control and are comfortable in dynamic, open-ocean conditions. A good level of swimming fitness and confidence in the water is essential.

Daily outings last approximately 6-8 hours depending on sea and weather conditions. Expect early morning departures to search for the action!
